  • straining bag

Hi does anyone know where I can get a jelly/jam straining bag on the internet from. They are so expensive in the shop near me and we dont have many other shops I can go to. Many thanks

I get stuff like that from Lakeland - might be cheaper places but they are pretty good.

I go with Irie Jan and use muslin cloth, though melted my plastic sieve one year. Now use muslin in a metal conical sieve. More expensive but lasts longer.

Lakeland do a stand as well so you can hang up the bag, then leave it to do its stuff rather than stand there holding it.

Ascott - Jam Straining Bag - Jam Making Equipment

Jelly Strainer Set- Lakeland, the home of creative kitchenware

          Cookability - Jelly Bag UK

The Cookability one is the cheapest, but the Lakeland one is the best (IMO)

I use either an old, thin tea-towel or two thicknesses of muslin, tied in each corner with string and hung on a stout hook.

I bought a lakeland one last year, it's great!
Do remember by Mum using a tea towel tied to all four legs of an upturned stool!

I have a friend who uses a very old boiled to death pillowcase.

I go with the improvised versions, pillowcase, well boiled muslin nappy, cheesecloth, whatever you've got! (I even used an old white gent's shirt a couple of times) Drape over colander, pour stuff into the cloth, tie all 4 corners together with string, and suspend from whatever hanging point you can find. We have nice wooden doorknobs on our 'upper level' kitchen cupboards, so it can hang above the bowl, bucket or saucepan into which I want things to drip.

I used to use muslin type material chopped off a curtain I got in the charity shop. Its long since died, so I was going to buy white baby muslins and make my own bag. Get them in packs of 3 from Boots

You can buy muslin by the yard from a good curtain shop. Remember to wet it first before you start straining!
An upturned stool makes a good holder, you can tie the ends to each leg at the exact height you want above the bowl.

And you can use it for straining yoghurt too to get the really thick creamy version.
