  • Ginger help

I got my online shopping delivered last night, and once I'd unpacked it, realised that I'd got so much fresh ginger it was unbelieveable!!

I'd ordered (and been charged for) a small piece, but someone has picked me a piece larger than my hand!

What can I do with it?? Can it be frozen etc?

It will keep a long time in the fridge. It does freeze, so cut it up into 1-2" chunks and wrap in a freezer bag

Have a look and see if there are any bits that look like they might shoot, if so, plant them - ginger grows quickly

I always stick my fresh ginger in the freezer in a bag and then grate is as and when i need it.
Imagination is everything, it is a preview of what is to become.

Love the freezing idea, I'll have to try that one.

I usually peel and chop finely and keep in a jar in sunflower or veg oil. Like the cheats ginger you can get in jars from the supermarket. If you add garlic and chillies as well that's great to use in stir frys instead of buying a stir fry oil.

Or if you want to make some flavoured olive oil, put some peeled ginger, whole peeled garlic cloves and whole chillies into a bottle, pour in olive oil and leave for a few months to develop a nice spicy flavour. (Shake it up from time to time) Then use as a base for a salad dressing or cook with it i.e. Thai Curry. Depending on how spicy you want it, keep the chillies whole for a mild flavour of cut in half lengthways. Same with garlic, either keep cloves whole or cut in half to release more flavour.

Jilly - as Shirley say, pot it up and grow your own! I actually went to the supermarket today and brought back several pieces specifically to grow! Makes an interesting pot plant as a present too! Oh yes, it'll grow well on a sunny window cill, even outdoors once some it's warm enugh.

I really dislike the smell of ginger as I'm grating it, so I when I buy a piece I grate the whole thing and get it over with, then I freeze it in teaspoonfuls in ice cube trays, then put them in a bag when they've frozen - jobs done in a few minutes and keeps me going for ages.
Life is too short for drama & petty things!
So laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly!
