On the subject of cookery books we have just been into town and not only did my OH let me go into WH Smiths but he let me look at the cookery books - which he never does! Then he actually let me buy Nigel Slaters Kitchen Diaries which is a book I have wanted for absolutely ages! Half price just £12.50!

I am with you DDL I too read cookery books like novels. The romance of flavours, the thrill of will it work won't it and if it's a horror you can bet Gary Rhodes did it!

First , I'm a bloke and don't find HFW even slightly cute, second for those of us old enough to remember the good life on telly, hugh brought it to life and up to date. His background as a chef clearly helps, but for me it's the eat in season bit I thank him for.As a shooter I always had the policy if you shoot it you have to eat it,so when the farmer wanted the grey squirrles out of his new plantation we ended up with squirrel pie,boy could I have done with Hughs ideas then(it was in the 70's).
I now only grow enough to eat fresh and don't freeze produce from the garden, for that I'm thankful for the river cottage, though now I live at the coast it's what sea food can I eat, so it's back to cooking on the wild side for me.Anyone got a Scottish Paealla recipe?

DDL - yes I already use Northen Harvest, they deliver to me on a Thursday and between them, my own stuff, a fish delivery service and a box scheme I can now avoid the supermarket most of the time which is great in my mind!

LJ - don't know Nigel Slater, what sort of stuff is he cooking, may need a trip to Smiths if it's on offer although have promised myself not to buy any more books for a bit.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Alison Nigel Slaters Kitchen Diaries is a year of seasonal food and recipes. It's British cookery with a few spicy recipes as well. But you also get chat from Nigel which is why they called it a diary. It's not like a standard cookery book and I can't wait to read it!

Sounds like I may have to nip to Smiths on Monday lunch time - incidently went for the Gardener's Chicken tonight from the Abel & Cole book and can highly recommend it. Chicken thighs cooked with onion, squash, carrots, walnuts and a bit of fresh sage - lovely!

Nigel Slater cooks lots of real food. Good quality, proper food, no poncing about and no dodgy hairdos.

I've got his book "Real Food" and it's great. It's divided into chapters titled things like, sausages, potatoes and chocolate!

He even gives a recipe for chocolate cornflake cakes that are to die for.

Nigel Slater's books are great. I got them as presents for our boys last year and they think they're great too. I like his recipes as he doesn't use lots of ingredients, the idea being that you can concentrate on the best. Anyone seen his programme where he makes a bacon sandwich?? Ooooooh drooling just thinking about it! (The bacon sandwich not Nigel Slater!)

Well I love both of them for quite different reasons, I couldn't stand JO at the beginning, hated his snug little face, ghastly accent and infernal bounciness but .... then I saw a bit of his programme, trying to turn kids into chefs and was cynical but impressed, what really did it for me was his school dinner campaign and that moment in his Italian travels when he couldn't bring himself to slit that lamb's throat. I think both have done a huge amount to wake people up to what they're shoving down their throats and that can only be a good thing. How those mothers who collected orders for garbage food and passed them through the school railings can live with themselves I'll never know. That's my rant for the day.... feel better already
