Playing devils advocate for a minute.Still think this is a modern "Good Life".Appealing to the middle classes with lots of money but very little time as some sort of alternative life style. For example getting back to his free book in one of Saturdays papers - wild food in season - squirrel.Come on even if its worth the effort, unless you could prove that you killed the squirrel in a humane way which would take alot of skill, killing a squirrel would be an illegal act.Have to say love his recipes ,his promotion of farmers markets, and his general approach to food but the end product is still little better than romantic fiction.River Cottage is not a smallholding its cleaver marketing and good tv.
As you say Silver8 this 'Good Life' if you go the whole way and opt out of the rat race is definitely available only to people with lots of money. For most of us it is just a dream. However, that doesn't stop us growing our own vegetables and fruit and collecting any free wild food. Although squirrel would never find it's way into my oven.
River Cottage is not a smallholding. It is Hughs business. He kept the name River Cottage for his business and moved himself and his family to a farm. Now he has moved to a new farm which we should see in Hughs new series on channel 4.
Some people are bloody lucky and they are able to live the dream. You never know though one day it could be us.
Silver8 are you sure it's not just the red squirrel that is protected. I think the grey is fair game if you'll pardon the pun. There was talk about a cull somewhere or other fairly recently.
Bright Blessings
