  • Mooli?

Just bought some mooli seeds and just wondered........once I've grown it what do I do with it? can it be cut into chunks and boiled/steamed like a snowball turnip? Does it taste like a snowball turnip? Or can I only use it raw in salads?

    Any ideas?

I like mooli as a Japanese dish - cubes alongside sashimi, dipped into a sauce of soy, mirin and rice wine vinegar with some wasabi. It's nice in sushi too.

I've never tried it cooked to be honest - I think it's suited to being treated like a big exotic radish.

its also called daicon(?) radish. peel it and slice thinly for stir fries steam or boil it and use as a vegetable.grate it, season with soy sauce and sesame oil add some chopped corriander and beanshoots a little drizzle of honey.YUM it has a peppery taste like radish.

It's brilliant on its own as a snack - just dip in hummous or salad cream or sour cream and chive dip or anything you like. Ketchup maybe? Lovely!

Kind of from the radish family....mooli or daikon are its common names.

Chinese don't really eat raw veg - my mum would peel and chop in chunks and put it in a beef stew with carrots. That's usually quite good.

Or you can cube it and make it into pickle. Chinese make a sweet pickle with sweetened vinegar and cubed carrot and mooli - the result is more sweet than tangy, and the crunchy veg is lovely - a great appetiser!

The reason I asked was that one of the other plotholders grows it and gave me one to eat last year. I peeled it and munched it like a carrot, but I thought it tasted like a slightly peppery snowball turnip?

When snowball turnip is steamed it's one of my favourite vegetables and just melts in your mouth......I wondered if mooli was the same?

Looking forward to growing it and I'll let you know the results!

Ha ha - just looked a this thread to make some suggestions that were told to me, and I see you've uncovered my old thread Snadger!
I can vouch for it raw with hummus - thanks Flummery. We've also discovered that the Chinese people my OH works with are keen on it, so much of last year's harvest was greatfully received by them once we'd had enough of it!

Can be used as turnip or raddish excellent cold and raw, or stir fried, or in stews/curries/chillies. Basically very versatile.

                      That was really funny Snadger.....

I would try grating Mooli with carrot and dress with a vinaigrette sounds like it could work nicely. In fact I might try growing some, their size makes them a pretty cost effective veg.
