  • National Big Lunch - Sunday 19th July

Anyone planning on participating in THE BIG LUNCH (national street parties on Sunday 19th July) when the idea is (evidently!) that the nation sits down to eat its own homegrown produce...!!? It's a huge, huge, HUGE idea being promoted (?) by the Eden Project, the RHS and several major outfits including MasterCard and the Post Office and Royal Mail, Google etc... I came across it on the Net by accident, searched for it on this List but couldn't find any earlier references (naff search facility on these Lists if I may say so...) so sorry if repeating earlier correspondence... Ace idea, fun for allotments (bring your own carrots...), I'd travel and take stuff to a GYO version but am not personally inclined to organise one locally as will become a nightmare of Local Authority road closures, insurance etc... But I'm intriqued that there's this massive national "Grow Your Own" (and Eat Your Own) idea afoot for July, it's already mid April and I for one hadn't heard of it.... So someone write and tell me I should get out more... Supported by the Prime Minister, Jamie Oliver (is he Prime Minister yet?), Boris Johnson, Sainsburys, John Lewis, Coop etc etc Have you heard of it? Further details on
    Big Lunch
Have a look... extraordinary! But will it happen?

Not heard about it, but I've put a pin in to register interest.

Just reviving this thread to ask if anyone has ended up organising or attending a Big Lunch (national street parties) this coming Sunday July 19th - see
      Big Lunch

I did see one ad on TV a while ago and a neighbour thought she'd heard of it.... but that was about it. So reality seems to be falling short of the Eden Project's claim:
"On 19th July we're asking the people of Britain to stop what they're doing and sit down to lunch together. Why? Well for lots of reasons really but mainly to put a smile back on Britain's face."

Is it happening near you, perhaps I should get out more?

Having one here on our local park Burder Street Loughborough 12.00 - 14.30.
The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

It's not really been publicised all that much has it? Shame though as the idea was nice.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Big Lunch hasn't had much publicity has it? I'd only vaguely heard of it.
I just entered my postcode and found a local event, but they only have one attendee listed lol!

We're having a bbq the week after, and I always invite the neighbours, does that count? I don't really fancy the idea of inviting total strangers off the internet, tbh. They might rob all my tomato plants

Our nearest one has posters up. Only 2 attendees on the website, but I would guess there will be a lot more on the day. Can't decide whether to go or not. I am wondering whether the person doing it is a grape whose location I know is in the same village.......

One local council has told an organiser that he needs £5 million Public Liability Insurance for the picnic he was planning on

I just thought it was a big publicity stunt by MasterCard.
