  • Broadies - How do you eat yours?

Ok I'm stumped. I've got a million broad beans all ready to harvest and since i've realised that they're not too nice raw I'm at a loss over what to do with them.

Any suggestions or recipes would be appreciated!

Georgio Locatelli has the best BB recipe in his big book.... Takes some doing but it's soooooo good.

l always double shell mine unless theyre tiny. Great with pasta or mush them up for a spread/dip.

I could eat BBs by the ton ... If only someone else could do all the prep!

Once you boil them they are really quick to double pod, you can just squeeze one end and out they pop!
Double podded they are wonderful (and I don't like them raw either), with a little butter and a squeeze of lemon. Divine!

I cook them and then eat them cold in a salad with olive oil, garlic, chopped up mint and a squeeze of lemon juice.

it appears, according to family folk lore that many years ago my children having been called in to sunday dinner were presented, by me, instead of a lovely roast, a BROAD BEAN CRUMBLE ...however i have no recollection of how to make this.....

BROAD BEANS WITH ONIONS AND BACON

                        INGREDIENTS:
                        250g broad beans, shelled
                        1 tablespoon olive oil
                        ½ onion, chopped
                        175 ml chicken stock
125 g smoked bacon, thinly sliced
                        juice of 1 lemon
                        salt and pepper to taste

                        METHOD:
                        1. Cook the broad beans in boiling salted water for 2 minutes.
                        2. Drain and cool. Peel and discard the outer skins.
                        3. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium–high heat.
                        4. Add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes.
                        5. Add the broad beans and bacon and sauté for a further 5 minutes.
                        6. Add the stock and bring to a boil.
                        7. Reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the broad beans are tender.
                        8. Add lemon juice and season to taste with salt and pepper.
                        9. Serve warm or at room temperature.

If you have them small and fresh then you can skip numbers 1 and 2.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I've never double poddeed them. People pay good money for roughage!

Lightly boiled or steamed and served just as they are as a veg accompaniment or with crushed, seriously well grilled bacon as a starter.
Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.
