  • Pangasius/Basa Fish

I've been trying to get my fussy lot to eat more fish in an effort to eat more healthily but they aren't keen on the reasonably priced oily fish and cod is certainly too expensive. In the supermarket today they had some frozen fillets of Pangasius or Basa fish, labelled as farmed sustainably in vietnam. The price was extremely reasonable.

Has anyone tried this? I did google it but mostly came up with a lot of political literature regarding the American Catfish market.

I think that's Vietnamese River Cobbler. It's not bad, but not all that tasty. It's also a bit watery. Better in fish pies and things.

Yeah, it just made the news as some unscrupulous fish and chip shop owners were selling it as cod.

It's quite nice in it's own right if not a little bland and small flaked.

I think I made Tempura with it.

I think its quite good. My kids don't like fishy fish so I spread it with pesto sauce and grill it, goes down a treat! No skin or bones on the youngs fillets I've bought which is also a bonus.

I wonder whether this would be nice in the recipe Rick Stein was sampling in Cambodia?

Thanks for the recipe link Shirley - the Crispy Baked Basa sounds tasty!

I have loads of Basil on the plot at the moment so your idea sounds good BeccyBex - could use some of my (pathetically small) crop of garlic drying in the shed.

The lack of bones, skin and fishy taste should help with my plan to sneak more fish into our diets The tempura suggestion has given me an idea Fat Bob. How does small slices of the fish dipped in an Indian style pakora batter sound? It's been a huge success with the cauliflower, courgettes and onions from the plot this year.

But then I suppose it totally defeats my original idea of healthy eating - this is why I need to lose 2 stone
