Hi, could anyone help identify these mushrooms. I'm 99.9% sure they are chanterelles, (the pictures don't really show the lovely yellow/golden colour they are). Classic location - under a big beech tree in a mixed beech/birch/pine wood. Have been out for a couple of weeks, so not looking their best anymore. Probably missed the best of them for cooking this year, but as they grow in the same place every year I'll make a note for next year.

I think so. The shape of the ridges on the underside, there really aren't many that look like that. If they are golden yellow as well.......
I think the only other species with that form is the 'death trumpet', so called because they tend to appear in early November, around All Soul's Day (also known as "the day of the dead"). Perfectly edible, in fact I bought some dried ones last time we were shopping in a French Supermarket.
Lucky person! I've never seen Chanterelles growing, only in the shops or illustrations in my mushroom book!Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

I'm pretty sure it 's a chanterelle, Mac, but way past its best. They seem to thrive on our acid soil up here and start to fruit in late July, early August. They have a wonderful flavour but are a pain to clean!
There are also false chanterelles which are paler, almost buff, not the lovely egg yolk yellow of the real thing, but they are also edible if not so good.Last edited by annacruachan; 08-08-2009, 09:22 PM.
