  • Double Standard Bicolour Sweetcorn

    SweetCorn Seed

My OH just got back from work early, and is watching cricket, so I thought I'd crack open some of the above sweetcorn [see linkie] for a late lunch early teatime treat.

    Boil a pan of water
When boiling, go to garden and pick sweetcorn
run back to pan taking corn packaging off and slam corn into pan
    boil for 10 minutes
take out and smother with butter

Make sure you have something to wipe your hands on once you are done.

    Lush.

I have just done this with one change in for safety reasons.

We had to pick the corn first then boil the pan. 5 mins 13 secs to go

Next time I will leave the missus on pan boiling duty whilst I wait on the blocks at the allotment for the signal. On hearing the boiling signal, I will rip off the cobs and pass them relay style to my good friend Usain Bolt who will deliver the corn to the house whilst husking the it at world record speed. I will then sprint home with two more for the comparison about 2 hours later

    Oh times up...yay. yum

Well they didn't last long. Absolutlely phenominal flavour.

Of the two cobs I picked, one was from the middle of the block and one from the edge.

One was 'bicoloured' as expected and tasted lush.the other was smaller and all the same colour and not so lush.

So I reckon the not so lush single coloured one was from the edge of the block and had been cross-pollinated with a hybrid variety from down the way.

I was just about to ask a seed saving question but thought it might be better to put that in another thread. I will definately grow this again next year though.

I'm growing these too but they're a long way off ready yet.

I'm growing them too. Tried last year and had a very disappointing crop as they got rather taken over by a very vigorous squash. This year looking much better but a couple of weeks off eating. Not that I eat them anyway as they make me want to vomit (it's the way they burst like a spot when you bite into them, makes me feel queasy as I'm typing!) but OH loves them so grow for him.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I grew Double Standard last year and they were rubbish.... this year they were all I had as all my others failed to germinate.

This year ... they're a lot better. Very tall plants, lots of big fat cobs (I hope they are full of kernels and not just teasing me). Must be all the early rain they had.
