  • Enjoying your crop

What nice tasty things have you made from your crop?

I am enjoying tasty sweet cherry toms just as they are and runner beans and courgettes with our dinner most nights and salad leaves and beetroot, celery and green peppers every day for lunch.

So far OH (chef) has made

Several apple crumbles, apple strudel and apple strusel. Apple sauce and Apple cake.
Greengage jam, greengage crumble, Greengage jelly.
    Tomato apple and basil jelly
Tomato, apple, courgette and celery pickle.
Pasta sauce from Toms, courgette, onion and basil.
Stewed fruit mixes for breakfast with muesli.
He is also experimenting with wine!

Still to come are sweetcorn, squashes, chillis etc and loads more toms. We have the first large ripe Aubergine ready to pick and some small ones coming. So pretty much all of our meals are coming from the garden. We are so thrilled.

What have others made, please share your ideas.

Yes, it's that time of year BumbleB and isn't it great.
We've been eating all our own salads
Tomatoes, fresh and cooked in sauces and soups with loads in the freezer
    Cucumber, fresh and soup
Courgettes and squash - every way I can think of
    Beetroot
Onions, garlic and shallots for cooking
    Carrots
    Kohl Rabbi
Cabbage, I like it baked in a cheese sauce
Aubergine - sliced longways, stuffed with 3 cheeses and folded in half and baked in a home made tomato sauce
Chillies and pepppers - stuffed with cream cheese, lemon juice and garlic and popped in the oven about 20 mins
Sweetcorn - just raw or cooked and smothered in butter
Beans - French and runners and broadies
    Potatoes - all salad types
Spinach, Pak Choi, Mizuna, herbs, peas.
And all the winter crops still to come.
    Oh yes, it's great.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

It's been very, very slow season for us so far but...

Tonight we had pork and chilli sausages with home grown roast veg with herbs, mustard mash served with home made Mediterranean Chutney. Oh my, it was sooooo lovely.

      So far I've made....

      Sweet Pickled Beetroot
      Strawberry Jam
Lemon Curd (from the lemon tree on my kitchen windowsill)
      Beetroot Chutney
Spiced Courgette Chutney with Smoked Paprika
      Pickled Shallots
      Sweet Pickled Gherkins
      Rhubarb Crumbles

We've also enjoyed lots of fruit and veg including cabbages of various varieties, broad beans, mange tout, strawbs, salads, beetroot, carrots, loads of herbs, shallots, onions, and cucumber. My sweetcorn, toms, chillies, peppers, aubergines, parsnips, runner beans, apples, Crown Prince, BNS, Jack O Lantern and brambles are nearly there and will be turned into more tasty treats.

Great. I might steal a few of those. I like the Aubergine with 3 cheeses idea and chilli and pepper too - mine are still green but big!

I wish we had lemon trees, I do love everything lemon. And mediterranean chutney sounds yum.

Only problem is all of the washing up after so much cooking going on!

Get a dishwasher BumbleB. Well worth the investment and you'll never regret it.

Too many cakes really....... but my excuse is I need the energy to go and dig four more beds, cut the overgrown hedges back about two foot as well as the general weeding etc.
Failing that i'll take up jogging up and down the lanes round our allotment site.

I've also eaten several carrots raw after checking how well they're doing.
