  • Need H-E-L-P from wise ones please!!!!

the recipe i am in the middle of making calls for celery salt and, of course, when i looked, i didnt have any.

does anyone know what else i can use or is it really an important ingredient (making roasted tomato sauce from the River cottage book)

    thanks

    Just add salt to taste.

Celery salt is just salt mixed with ground celery seeds.

I'm sure the dish won't taste that much different without the flavour of celery.

It will probably survive without it, but, if you have any celery seeds grind a teaspoon or so and use them in place. Or, if you have actual celery, grate a stick (or a half if big) in.

I'm with Fiona on that one. Not keen on celery for cooking. Ordinary salt will be fine.

thanks folks, took your advise, used ordinary salt, made the kids taste it a breakfast this morning (!!) and apparently it's good! no more shop bought tomato ketchup for us hopefully!

I tried celery salt once. I really didn't like it but I'm in the "celery is horrid" camp here! Ordinary salt, as you've found out, is fine.

I love eating celery, but find celery salt really weird. I'm with Sarz, substitute with ordinary salt (I use sea salt) and finely chop or grate some celery in if you like it.

I'm a fan of Halen Mon sea salt - always worth the extra to me. I don't eat celery raw, but use it loads in cooking - always in Italian dishes that start with a sofrito onion/celery/garlic/carrot style base.

I quite like celery salt too - wouldn't have a Bloody Mary without it!
