Please let me know what you think if you make it. I kinda made up the recipe as I went along and it has worked the times I have done it but it would be nice to have confirmation from someone else.

            Hi Shirley,

I'm sure your recipe is great, but I followed a different whole chicken recipe once and I ended up with a disintegrated chicken. Made good soup tho.

I should probably try yours however, as it's tried and tested!

PS the slow cooker seems to have bbq-type attraction for OH. He seems quite happy to treat it as a man toy and use it. His favourite is a Thai-style chicken soup.
            Caro

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day

                Jilly,

Ask and it shall be given

                1tbsp sunflower oil
                1 finely chopped onion
3 boneless skinless chicken breasts (approx 550g total) diced
                2 finely chopped garlic cloves
3 tsp Thai red curry paste
                1.2 litres chicken stock
                2 tbsp soy sauce
                1tbsp Thai fish sauce
                125 button muchrooms sliced
                1 large carrot thinly sliced
                125 g baby sweetcorn, sliced
                50g mangetout sliced
coriander or basil leaves, torn into pieces
2 limes, cut into wedges, to serve

Fry off chicken & onions for 5 mins until lightly browned (in pan large enough to take stock) .
Add garlic and curry paste, cook for 1 min
Add stock, soy sauce, fish sauce, bring to the boil.
Put carrots and mushrooms into the slow cooker and pour the hot stock mix over.
Cover & cook on low for 5-7 hours.
Mix in corn cobs, mangetout and herbs, cover & cook for further 15 mins
Serve in bowls, with lime wedges.

                Enjoy!

The chicken does tend to fall apart in my recipe too. Just remove the bones and bung all the meat in a serving dish with the onions and garlic and mush in

I've just looked up Ginger's link. The book she's referring to is the one I got. At £3.99 it's a bargain, particularly as it talks you through the idea behind slow cooking and the methodology, so you can try your own recipes, rather than just sticking to those in the book.

When looking on the internet a while back for chilli con carne recipes (well we're veggies so it's chilli non carne) there were warnings not to cook kidney beans in a slow cooker as it doesn't get hot enough to kill off the toxins, which can be deadly. Either buy pre-cooked in tins or cook separately and add afterwards.

Slow cooking is definitely a way of life and with a little planning can leave you just about free from the regular kitchen chores.
There are so many recipes on the web it's untrue but the favourite of our grandchildren is traditional American meatloaf. It takes very little preparation and around eight hours in the slow cooker/bottom AGA oven.
If you've never tried it, it's a taste reminiscent of the Westler's Hamburgers that used to be served at the funfairs. The ones that came in a huge cylindrical tin. The only way we vary the recipe is to use less ketchup and wrap the loaf in streaky bacon before closing up the tinfoil to make a sort of loaf tin/cake tin shape..

                              Crock Pot Meat Loaf Recipe

                              2 1/4 pounds ground beef
                              1/4 cup ketchup
                              2 tablespoon brown sugar
                              1 egg
1 cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
                              2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
                              1 large onion (diced)
                              1/4 cup water

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl.

Form into a meatloaf shape that will fit into your crock pot.

Cut a strip of foil and place under the meatloaf in crock pot.

Cut it long enough to cover the bottom and sides of meatloaf.

Place meat loaf in crock pot and top with an additional 2 tablespoons ketchup.

Cover and cook on low for approximately 8 hours.

                              Serve with fresh, hot roles.
