lots of sloes!

Hello,

After a recent long weekend in Dorset my girlfriend and I came back with a rather impressive haul of sloes! They are currently in the freezer with some of them being lined up to make some sloe gin, however we will have a lot left over afterwards so i was wondering if anyone has any ideas of what we can do with the rest? seems ashame to waste them

I love the stuff. I'm also trying sloe vodka to see if that's any good (I expect it's not as good or it'd be as popular).

I'm sure there are several jams you can make, but that's not my specialist area. An advisor will be on the line shortly...please hold...

You can make sloe gin, sloe vodka, probably sloe jam.

Ooh you lucky thing. I live in Dorset yet can't find any sloes. Last year my sister gave me some from France and I had bought some gin in Spain for 3.49 euros a bottle. The sloe gin was lovely. Wish I had made more.

A week on Monday I'll be starting a Sloe wine using 2kg (4.5lbs) of my Sloe haul...

...with the rest I'll be making sloe gin, sloe gin with FERMENTED sloes, and more than likely some sloe whisky (rumour has it it's lovely stuff) too.

For a few years I could not find sloes anywhere... then completely by chance I was walking by a hedgerow when something I thought was a blueberry caught my eye... imagine my surprise when I realised I'd stumbled across a rathre large row of blackthorn!

I've got a total of about 3.5kg (7.75lbs) of the things so far and there was still plenty of picking left to be done.

I'm heading back in the morning to make sure I've got enough for all my cunning sloe-plans.

Thanks to Lainey Lou's link above I think I've found a use for some of the bramley apples I have here, and I'll probably put some jam away too if I have enough after all that!

Good luck everyone with your sloes .... we picked 4.5 lbs of them yesterday.

This is our first 'attempt' with sloes, so bought a bottle of gin and now have 2 bottles of sloe gin fermenting.

Using the rest with 4lb of crab apples (was wondering what to do with them) and will soon be making crab apple and sloe jelly.

All in all not a bad result as sloes and crab apples didn't cost anything.
