  • Any good spice recommendations?

I'm not convinced that my regular supermarket spices are ever so brilliant, having recently tried some amazing peppercorns, and I'd like to find an online supplier of really good spices as I use them loads.

We do have some decent Asian shops and a Chinese market nearby, but they sell mainly in bulk rather than the smaller quantities I want, and they don't have all the things I want. I've been looking at a few websites, but wondered if anyone's beat me to it and found a really good supplier?

I always used to use fox's spices. They had a fantastic online shop until it closed down!

    Not too helpful, sorry.

I checked for Sumac- and they have it much cheaper than I've been buying it in England

I have to place another order for a friend and I next week. Their Smoked Paprika is very good and they have a good selection of the more unusual herbs and spices and can provide different quantities than those listed. All their bits and pieces come in resealable labelled bags.

Rhona have you tried Julian Graves they have stores and on line, I get my spices from either Rowsley or Chesterfield and I'm sure they have a shop in Sheffield.

I use the Unicorn Grocery in Chorlton, Manchester. Most of their spices are organic, and if you buy them whole and toast/grind them yourself you get a MUCH nicer flavour.
I believe you need to get them as fresh as possible though as they all lose some flavour over time.

I mainly do my own cumin for a really nice Greek (Cypriot actually) thing I make - the flavour of the freshly toasted (takes a couple of minutes and is VERY easy) and ground (in a pestle and mortar) spices done whenever they are needed is amazing.
As soon as I've used up my supply of ground cinnamon I'll be doing that myself too.

If you can find a local "ethical" or wholefoods shop you should find plenty of spices in there. A local equivalent of Unicorn would be perfect but I dunno if there's anything like that out your way.
