I am making a cottage pie for tea but was wondering if instead of topping it with mash potato I could top it with sliced potatoes instead? Can anyone offer some advice please
You can put a little oil on the tatties so they crisp nicely on top, you'll need to put foil on for about 45 minutes then take off foil until brown so they are properly cooked

Sounds good to me jilly, I 'do' pork chops like this often, layer onions at bottom, chops on top of onions then apples over chops then tatties layered over apples totally delish, sometimes I'll put cabbage at the bottom too.
Depending on your oven it should in total be about 1 hour/15 mins max.

Just wanted to let you know that the "Sailor Pie" was a great success and it has now been added to the list for our weekly meal planner - thank you everyone for you advice :-)
Think I might be endulging in a little 'Sailor Pie' tonight

With sliced potatoes on top you are half way to a hot pot
Aye, sounds like Lancashire hotpot we had at school. Mince & veg covered in thinly sliced potato. Beautiful.
