I am making a cottage pie for tea but was wondering if instead of topping it with mash potato I could top it with sliced potatoes instead? Can anyone offer some advice please

You can put a little oil on the tatties so they crisp nicely on top, you'll need to put foil on for about 45 minutes then take off foil until brown so they are properly cooked

When I were a lass and we had it like this Ma called it sailor pie. Never knew why and I suspect if I ask her now she'll have forgotten!

        Thank you HayleyB :-)

So I thinly slice the spuds, layer then on top (raw) , brush with oil, cover with foil for 45 mins, then remove foil to brown spuds on top of pie.

Flummery, I love the name sailor pie, thats what I will call it too :-)

maybe it was a Sailor Pie because the sliced potato represented waves...

Sounds good to me jilly, I 'do' pork chops like this often, layer onions at bottom, chops on top of onions then apples over chops then tatties layered over apples totally delish, sometimes I'll put cabbage at the bottom too.

Depending on your oven it should in total be about 1 hour/15 mins max.

My mum used to grate cheese over the sliced spuds too.

Another nice topping is half spud and half squash mashed together. Or half spud and half parsnip.

With sliced potatoes on top you are half way to a hot pot

Aye, sounds like Lancashire hotpot we had at school. Mince & veg covered in thinly sliced potato. Beautiful.
