Maybe we can share the cake then Alison, as I only really like the icing and can take or leave the cake

      Lol Janeyo, good idea

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Fondant icing is easy to use, but will have all the lumps and bumps of the cake (trick number 1, turn cake upside down so the flat bottom becomes the top).
The Royal Icing mix you have needs making up with water (probably got directions on the packet, but may assume you will be using the whole pack at once), and spreading over the cake with a palette knife or spatula. Looks lovely if right, but something of a 'love child' to work with. Making up just a little to stick decorations on works well, it IS better than ordinary water ice, because it will spread without being so runny that it then runs off the cake, also water ice is glossy and a matt finish is best when adding thing like plastic Christmas trees or Santa sledges.

Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.
