  • new year menu?

    I am wondering what to cook for new year. Just the 2 of us, me a veggie and him not. (last year he had home made meatballs and I had 2sheds veggie burgers with a homegrown tom sauce concoction thingie - was delish)

    Was thinking of J Artichoke soup to start, and choc souffle for pud but not sure about the bit in between?

    Suggestions please (and need to be easy lol)

    Oh dear- at this rate we'll still be eating left overs!!!


    How about wild mushrooms in a creamy sauce with pasta and a salad and crispy bread?

      that sounds nice nicos -

      I have just looked in the fridge so might not have to brave the supermarket and have got some puff pastry and some goats cheese.. might have a look and see what I can do with that!

        Sorry can't help, we eat so much rich food over Christmas that we're only wanting something very light and simple by New Year so never do anything special.

        Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

        Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

          Don't do anything special for New Year. In fact I'm usually in bed before Midnight these days. Still got loads of food left in the fridge and freezer, so won't be buying anything in.

            How about a pasta dish such as chili lentil? It basically uses tinned toms, tom puree, onion, red lentil, on a bed of spaghetti and with some veggie cheese grated over. If you are interested I'll post the recipe on 'ere!

              As much as I adore cooking, we've entertained for almost every meal since Christmas - including breakfast - and I'm pretty shattered now! We're not partying NYE, and I don't want heaps of cooking to do, but want to do a bit.

              We're going to my mothers for New Year's Day lunch, and that will be fairly heavy, so my initial thoughts for NYE are;

              No starter, but Vietnamese rice paper rolls as nibble with Champagne (light and spicy); and beef satay with ginger and spring onion for main course.

              If you like the sound of either, let me know and I'll post recipe (could substitute tofu for beef), but won't go with either your starter or pud, I suppose.

              How about aubergine rolls stuffed with cous cous, baked in tomato sauce? It's a Nigella recipe, and very gorg, and a bit special.

                sounds good to me but OH has a hatred of lentils, since watching the Young Ones lol

                    Here you go! It's actually involtini - you can fiddle around with it endlessly, and use up some nuts/cheese/dried fruit you have lingering around, if you wanted (within reason, I suspect Stilton would be a bit 'challenging').

                    BUt the basic thing - the stuffed rolls, in the tomato sauce (with a touch of chili?), maybe with blobs of buffalo mozz on top, is lovely.

                    It's what I occasionally do for veggie guests, and seems to go down well! Good to make ahead too. Have a lovely NYE! x

                      We're having an Indian: if it's too mucky to go out, we'll get it delivered. Then I shall go to sleep my normal time, but set the alarm for 5 to midnight, so I can join Mr TS in a glass of Asti (anything drier gives him heartburn).

                        We try to represent all the different cultures in our house so we have an American Thanksgiving, British Christmas, A Southern US/Cuban New Years and a big bash on St. Patrick's Day. lol

                        We'll be having a Cuban Pork Roast, Congri (beans and rice cooked together) with cream of mushroom soup based gravy, Boiled cabbage, an apple tart tatin, and lots of sparkling wine.

                        The apple tart is a new addition to the New Years' Menu. It makes so much sense when one thinks of it seasonally, and I have a few French ancestors...

                          ok so we had creamy jerusalem artichchoke soup, goats cheese and leek puff pastry tarts (OH's had bacon on too), and a scrummy gooey hot choc pud souffle type thing.
                          Am still full up today!

                          Think I have gone up the ranks now to 'competent' cook! As I surprised myself greatly
