Home made Tatty Pie and always, always, always with a thick crispy shortcrust pastry top with extra mushy peas - well we all need plenty of gas in winter!!

Potaoes cut into cubes, chopped onion, stewing steak or mince - bung in a big pan with gravy and summer for about an hour - turn into an ovenproof dish and cover with a thick shortcrust (not puff - no never - heathens!) pastry top brushed with milk and bake in oven for approx 25 minutes or until pastry cooked.

Think it's a northern thing but delicious all the same with brown sauce, pickled red cabbage or beetroot and not least the mushy peas - as Peter Kay would say in relation to the peas - has't thee owt wet

Thanks Mogs - being slightly on the veggie side I can see how this could work with lentils / chick peas without the steak or mince - I can see a session in the kitchen happening tomorrow!!

Again a northern stodge staple - but you could always try Butter Pie - same process just leave out the mince and gravy boil up in water, drain and add lots of butter - bit like onion mash with butter but with lumps in (tastes better than it sounds - honestly). Some add cheese, to make a cheesy tatty pie - but that's a bit haute cuisine in our house

Tonight was moules marinierre (because they were in the fridge) and then Sirloin beef stroganoff made with shitake mushrooms. Why the heck did Colemans stop making French mustard!
