Potaoes cut into cubes, chopped onion, stewing steak or mince - bung in a big pan with gravy and summer for about an hour - turn into an ovenproof dish and cover with a thick shortcrust (not puff - no never - heathens!) pastry top brushed with milk and bake in oven for approx 25 minutes or until pastry cooked.
Think it's a northern thing but delicious all the same with brown sauce, pickled red cabbage or beetroot and not least the mushy peas - as Peter Kay would say in relation to the peas - has't thee owt wet'May your cattle never wander and your crops never fail'

Again a northern stodge staple - but you could always try Butter Pie - same process just leave out the mince and gravy boil up in water, drain and add lots of butter - bit like onion mash with butter but with lumps in (tastes better than it sounds - honestly). Some add cheese, to make a cheesy tatty pie - but that's a bit haute cuisine in our house'May your cattle never wander and your crops never fail'
