  • Leftover pastry

What do you do with yours?

I made some beef, mushroom and red wine pies last night and had some pastry (puff) left over.

It was the ready made stuff as I'm rubbish at making it (hot hands you see), but I still don't like throwing it away, so I rolled it out, brushed it with egg and sprinkled some grated Parmesan, black pepper and oregano on it, used a pizza cutter to cut it into "straws" and threw them in the oven until golden.

I took a picture a minute ago, but my phone won't talk to my computer so I can't upload it.

So, what's your favourite thing to do with leftover pastry?

The same; and jam hearts. I have a heart shaped cookie cutter and pop a small spoon of jam in the middle and bake. Or anything with cheese and onion added. Yum!

That's almost exactly what I did the other evening. Neighbours were popping in for drinks and I wanted to do some reasonably substantial nibbles. I made parmesan straws, and also made some with a thin layer of rose harissa which were really nice.

You could also cobble together a sort of fake pain au chocolate-type thing, and wrap some melted butter-brushed pastry around dark chocolate and brush more butter on top before baking.

I just can't do that! With any leftovers. Hence why I weigh pasta before I cook it depending on who is eating and everything else gets heated up the next day for breakfast/lunch.

            Could never throw pastry away.

Waste not want not was always my motto. But, now that I do not have a family to feed and nothing very much to do apart from amuse myself I bake all day. It's not for eating ourselves it's just to keep me sane. My OH delivers food parcels nearly everyday lol.

I roll mine out, turn up the edges to make a lip all the way round, then I fill it with currents & sultanas then drizzle them with golden syrup, bake it and have it hot or cold with custard or cream...yum.

Cheesy things or roll out into a circle and add dried fruit, nutmet (grated, natch!) and brown sugar. Fold edges over and seal up, then turn it over and put on a grease baking sheet & cook. Hmmmm. Like an Eccles cake.

I make mini apple and sultana parcels, and serve hot with a little custard.
A good beginning is half the work.

Depends how much is left over. Sometimes there is just enough to do something pretty on the top of the pie, or sometimes I cut it into strips and lay it in a sort of lattice over blackberry and apples in a pie dish.

If there's enough I roll it into an oblong spread it with jam and roll up like a swiss roll and seal the ends, brush with milk and bake, lovely with a bit of custard!

They look a bit pasty pastry in that photo, but they look better in real life, promise. They taste good too.
