Mine's 10 inches.

I can't use anything smaller, I find it just doesn't feel right in my hand. I've tried using a smaller one, but I end up frustrated and annoyed with it.

So, how big is the knife you use in the kitchen?

If I had a boiler suite and a white mask I'd resemble Michael Myers in fact - it's similar to the one he has, but I keep mine clean and sharp.

Well you need to keep your chopper clean BG, what if you're expecting company!

My implement is a 20cm tool. (It's a global G-2 Cook's knife).

My step-brother was right, once you've held a good quality one in your hand you don't want to settle for anything less again.

I used to use a small serrated one, but I find I have better control over my 10" straight one.

I think its more about the skill involved when you use it.

I think that's right, but for me the smaller ones are too fiddly for my paws. It's important it doesn't flex either.

Silly me! I didn't realize we were talking about boats.

I use different size knives for different jobs. The 9" is best for cutting cheese and a lot of other jobs, but the short knife (maybe 6" total, perhaps a bit less) is better for peeling things and initial chopping of garlic or ginger (or anything else in that size range).
Then there is the Ulu knife for cutting raw meat or fish, and the similarly shaped chopper thing for reducing ginger, garlic and herbs to really small bits.
There are also larger knives for carving and bread slicing.
If I had to pick a single favourite it would be the smaller ordinary knife.
