  • Wartime recipes and Woolton Pie

    Just watching a programme called Ration Book Britain - Valentine Warner is busy making a success out of Woolton Pie - a veg pie with either pastry or potato crust. I just love the idea of this as my Grandma was a brilliant wartime cook - any other grapes share my enthusiasm?
    Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

    Yeah, I've been watching it too. I bet she couldn't make bean curd interesting.

        Yeah RGN, but Grandma didn't know about tofu - or soy sauce for that matter. She used to get olive oil from the chemist. She did a great line in cakes and tray bakes - I think developed post -war in the 50s and 60s - probably based on the women's magazines of the period.

          I missed the programme too but would have loved to have seen it. i do have some Stork war time cook books though so can try some recipes..I have been hunting for a recipe for Gyspy Tart ,it used condensed milk I'm sure over a jam layer. It was waiting for me at school after we came back from taking our 11+ exam. It was in hampshire but I think it must have been in school dinner recipe books in a few counties. If there is a wartime recipe anyone is looking for I might have it so just send me a PM.

                  I haven't seen the programme but I make a good veg. crumble if anyone wants the recipe. I also have a Farmer's Weekly cookbook from wartime. Loads of good,economical recipes if you grow veg. and keep poultry.
                  Lamb tail pie or sheeps head broth anyone?!

                    Thanks for that everyone . The tart we had definately had jam at the bottom and then a sort of custard tart top but definately made with condensed milk and was quite pale in colour so obviously not the boiled banoffee type filling. Haven't worked my way round the search facility but will try and do better in future. Sorry for any hassle incurred !!!!!!!

                      Jeanied, I caught the end of this programme, just as Valentine was serving the pie to his mum etc. I thought it looked really tasty, though I have no idea what actually went into it!

                        It was interesting to see - he cooked chopped onion in water, not oil - then added carrot and potato and some herbs I think. The key ingredient was the Bisto gravy added at the end!

                              I think I saw it on Good Food (Sky 249), yes, I'm sure I did. So if they are true to form, they'll repeat it hourly from now until the end of time.
