As well as considering flowers for companion planting- how about growing a few edible flowers too?
I bought some pansies yesterday, and hadn't realised they were edible and it got me thinking as I gazed and the rows and rows of wonderful packets of seeds (*sigh)
There must be plenty more flowers which can be grown for the kitchen- or just for a child-safe garden
so I did a bit of Googling!!

Edible Flowers - List of types, Uses and Recipes

Edible Flowers, How to choose Edible Flowers, Edible Flower Chart, List of Edible Flowers, Incredible Edible Flowers

OK- so those are just some ideas and recipes.
Whether they are for garnishing or eating/drinking, please follow the cautions which are suggested. If in doubt- don't pick!

For those of you tempted, but worried, T&M have a selection of edible flower seeds to choose from...

Edible flowers are more a feast for the eyes than the tummy I think.
However borage does taste cucumbery - and I love dead nettle flowers - very sweet. 9(These days I feel guilty about nicking them - I leave them for the bees who deserve them much more.)

I was reading the companion planting guide yesterday and noticed that nasturtiums are edible. I'm growing a few as companions for my tomatoes so am now looking forward to having a taste.

last year I tried pea blossoms, scarlet runner bean flowers and courgette flowers - don't remember any of them being that exciting, but they do look pretty on the plate

Oooooooo, Nasturtium flowers are lovely. I hope you like hot!
We use the leaves and flowers in salads and the seed heads I pickle and they taste like capers. So all in all a very useful plant that grows like stink!
            Good luck, Sandra

I use day lillies, English marigold, borage, nasturtium, sprinkled on a salad - they look gorgeous. The day lillies are surprisingly meaty (in substance, not flavour, which is slight.) I also use the petals from chives when they flower.

I hadn't thought of edible flowers for ages! In summer it would be lovely to have them on a salad. Our little ones are too young at the moment to understand that you can eat some flowers but not others, but might do some crystalized violets for cakes and things.

I clearly remember my father explaining about nasturtiums and being utterly charmed that you could eat a flower. Never knew about day lilies though - how pretty!

Years ago I read of violets (not just the flowers, stalks and leaves all together) being an old remedy for colds. I think the author was suggesting that they are loaded with vitamin C. It was in a book full of 'herbal' remedies and health-enhancers.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.
