  • Mangetout

Please could you give me your best ideas for using mangetout.

We do very few stirfries, I tried a raw one yesterday, it was OK I suppose, not brilliant, so salads seem a bit not great.
So is it just steaming them?

If you want them hot, just pour boiling water on them (in a pan!) and allow to boil for just a couple of minutes - I like them a bit al dente.
I like them raw in with a salad. It adds another degree of crispness to a salad.

Thanks, this is the first time I've ever grown them believe it or not.

So is boiling for a couple of minutes, better than steaming then?

I keep going to the top of the garden, collecting a handful but by the time I've got back to the house, they've gone.....

Anything you can do with runner-beans you can do with mange-tout.
I also occasionally put them in a salad, but par-boiled. Just pour plenty of boiling water over, let it stand a few mins, then strain, and add (still warm) to a salady mixture.

              I don't say it's better than steaming - it's quicker!

We've just had a handful of Flummery's Krombeks in a stir fry. They were nommy (a stir fry is just a hot salad)

wash and throw in a bowl a bit wet. Nuke 1 min, eat warm or cold. I cook them, cool them and throw them in a salad. The ones from the supermarket are quite stringy but I presumed it was because they won't be as fresh from the ones from home.

I can't grow mangetout, my seeds just didn't germinate this year.

We've had trouble too Bk I still keep poking seeds in the gaps. Next year they will be sown in loo rolls.

I thought mangetout were just peas that weren't ready. We picked loads yesterday and had them with dinner. They were lovely.

There's nothing to stop you from letting them grow on a bit and using the peas themselves if you're not so keen on them whole?

We don't eat stir-fry very often (the kids aren't keen), so we steam ours for 5 minutes and eat with light dinners such as chicken kiev and new potatoes.

Steam them for about 3 minutes so they're still nice and crunchy. Boiling is OK but gets rid of more nutrients and microwaving is a crime, they just don't taste / feel right. Also stir fry sometimes but steaming more often.

Well thankyou everyone! We've had a couple of mealfulls now and have steamed them for less than 5 mins and they have been beautiful.
I can't believe I haven't grown them before, all those wasted years
