  • 5min choc cake

Sorry, not home grown - unless you grow the stuff you need to make your own chocolate? (challenge to someone? ).

My wife found this on facebook - we tried it a while back, just remembered it. Bit repulsed by what goes into it, but it did actually taste quite nice. Perhaps one to put away for a cold winter's evening (seeing as it's not that far away now ) + a movie..

    5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

    4 tablespoons flour
    4 tablespoons sugar
    2 tablespoons cocoa
    1 egg
    3 tablespoons milk
    3 tablespoons oil
    3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
A small splash of vanilla extract
    1 large coffee mug

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.

Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.

Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.

Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high). The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed! Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.

EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous). And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world? Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!
We didn't use choc chips, but would have been nicer if we did.

sounds good to me! have never tried a cake in a microwave, as i only use it to cook 3 min. rice, and heat milk up ( don't think you are supposed to put milk in it?) i am sort of hoping i will forget this recipe before i get around to trying it- too many easy calories!!

I have tried it - twice.

Firstly, have you tried fitting all those quantities into a MUG!!!? If you do, and, yes, I did, the first time! It will come out like a messy Vesuvius, all over the Mug and the Microwave. Luckily, Mr. G, has one of those huge size stripy blue and white (Cornish?) Mugs, and I now make it in that. I would guess you could use a small Pyrex bowl or anything Microwaveable.

It is VERY useful if you get the urge for CAKE, but not the patience to make a proper one!

Mainly the oil... Whenever we've made cake we've never used oil (may be something to do with the veg we put in it - chocolate courgette cake, butternut square cake, beetroot cake (lovely!!), carrot, etc).

Just seemed a lot of oil!

I don't see why you can't use melted Butter instead of Oil?

I think the oil keeps it moist......its lovely.

Me and 7 year old made this. As soon as i told him i found a recipe for a 5 minute chocolate cake...he pestered me all day to make it.....Although it was a quick cake, i couldnt just do it when he wanted me to . so he had to wait......but it was well worth the wait.

You can guess what we are gonna be having a lot of now. Maybe we will experiment with different types.

                Thanks for this...its brill.

Oh, and i used a HUGE coffee mug that i had got at christmas. Its more like a soup mug....just perfect size

                Anyway thanks again for this

I love making (and eating!) cakes, so as soon as I read this recipe I rushed into the kitchen to try it. I made it in a Pyrex one pint jug and although I thought it might stick, it turned out quite easily - it looks just like a chocolate sandcastle!

I know it won't last long - the kids will be home within the hour!

If you have just a little more patience, you can make a 1 egg-quantity victoria sponge in a 1 pint glass bowl. It comes out nicer if cooked a bit longer (4 mins) on slightly reduced power (80%, or 'medium high'). You could put stewed fruit in the bottom for a pud, or choc chips (I wouldn't bother with the cocoa) for a cakey-thing.

If you haven't tried cake in the microwave before then try this, Tesco Chocolate Cake Mix, 45p in the baking aisle, we made it today and it was really light and fluffy, quite a surprise really.

I remember trying to make cakes in the microwave many years ago when they first came out and the cake was like a rubber ball!

You only need to add an egg and some water and cook it on high for 2 to 3 mins.

It was lovely, def and idea to have some in just in case you have a sudden sugar craving, takes about 10 mins to make and then 2 to 3 to cook.

When it says oil- does it mean sunflower oil-- or peanut oil - or what????

I always wonder whenevr it metions oil in recipes- cos there is such a choice of oil all with their own flavour!
( I bet walnut oil would taste nice with the chocolate???)

My sister in law uses a similar recipe to this and it is sunflower oil.

Yeah, I'd go for sunflower, because it doesn't taste of very much. Most other cooking oils do, and the tastes just might 'not mix' with cake! I've made cakes with sunflower-based margarine, and that worked well....
