Recipe from the 'Favourite Sweets and Toffee Recipe' book
1lb granulated sugar
2oz butter
1/4 pt evaporated milk
1/4 pt fresh milk
A few drops of Vanilla extract
Put all ingredients, except the vanilla extract, into a large heavy bottomed pan (like a maslin pan), and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil and boil steadily, stirring from time to time, until 'soft ball' stage is reached (drop a blob into cold water and roll between finger and thumb, or use a sugar thermometer). Remove pan from heat and put on a cool surface. Stir in the vanilla extract and beat the mixture until it is thick and starts to 'grain' but is still pourable. Pour straight into a buttered tin and leave to go cold and cut into squares.
