I've a Panasonic too - excellent machine, but I do find the fast-bake loaves to be a little heavier than the ones done over 5 hours.

I also find 50/50 toproduce the best

You get what you pay for, and there's always a reason something is reduced
Find out what model it is and google some reviews.

We bought a Kenwood BM450 a few months ago - it's really good. IIRC it was Which's best buy too (when we bought, dunno about now!) - but as above, it was quite pricey compared to the others we were looking at.

I bought my Panasonic after receiving recommendations from Grapes a couple of years ago - they were so right

We have a cheapie Kenwood bread maker, and the only time it has failed to produce something reasonable is when we've made a mistake.
Most of the time we are using the Wright's mixes (Premium White or Mixed Grain). The mixed grain one comes out a bit heavy, but that is how we like granary-style bread (I've recently taken to adding an extra ½ teaspoon sugar with the mix).
Occasionally we use 'ingredients' and then attention to detail pays off.
