  • Marras

My neighbour must have thought I was a complete idiot earlier. He said "Ya lyek marras?" and I just stood there waiting for the rest of the sentence.

I am now the proud owner of three young marrow plants and I'm wondering - are marrows the same as courgettes? Can I just pick them when they're small and cook them exactly the same way?

Courgettes ARE small marrows; however I believe like most things, marrows are bred for largeness and courgettes are bred for smallness....so I'd do the same, eat them small the same as courgettes.

Or grow them big and stuff 'em!

Thanks. I thought they were the same but felt it was wise to check. (I don't mind looking silly)
Aye, I have fond memories of stuffed marrows. Not sure Fussy would eat it though.

Like Zaz says, it's a matter of variety. Some varieties of marrow are bred to be eaten small as courgettes. Most will work OK for either use, but probably crop better for the 'intended' purpose.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

They'll probably end up on the lottie anyway so some will be neglected and end up growing to marrow size

Most marrows are bred to grow to a larger size than your typical courgette, though certain varieties of courgette (Ambassador being one) can be grown on to marrow size. If the seed packet said Marrow, let them grow - I grow courgettes by the bucket load and this year for a bit of fun, I am also trying to grow a Giant Marrow - you know, the ones that need a pallet and forklift to be moved - and that's definitely not an overgrown courgette!
