  • White turnips

Does anyone know anything about cooking white (summer) turnips? I know peope used to put them in stews.

OH grew quite a lot of them this year and as far as I can see, they are the least tasty vegetable ever.

Any suggestions would be welcome - thanks.

    What sort are they?

I would suggest grate them with carrot to go with salad, or steam lightly and serve with butter and freshly ground black pepper

I love em roasted too... but you can boil/steam em and mash with tatties and carrots, or what i do when we get a glut is cut into small cubes, blanch and freeze em for winter use.. i still got some down in the freezer from last year. The are great cooked in the microwave and the mixed with onions and mushrooms, etc for spag boli.

This is what I have done with the Snowballs I've grown that weren't damaged. The taste is amazing though, got bags and bags of them in the freezer and use them smashed with carrots, butter and black pepper or into stews or roasted.

I love the way they peel like a satsuma too.

Mine have tasted like nothing so far (i.e. tasteless) but I'm going to try some of the ideas given here in the replies.

Thank you everyone for your help.

                  I love em!

I also grow Mooli which has a similar taste and you get more 'bang for your buck' from a given area!

When I was on Atkins I was using them boiled in large pieces instead of spuds as I think they are relatively carb free!

The ones we've grown are slightly peppery, and are really moist inside, the wife pulled one on Saturday, which we bragged about after we enjoyed it, she then pulled one today and sat in the garden, between showers, and ate half of one, and gave the other half to our son, which he also ate, I never got so much as a sniff at it....

I've tried out the ideas given here and have got to know and enjoy this little veg. I've even frozen some white turnips for winter use.

                      Thanks again, everyone
