Mutton Steaks: What to do with them?

Hi,

A few weeks ago I bought two mutton steaks on a whim and want to cook them this weekend. Does anyone know how I can cook them? Can they be cooked quickly or should I slow cook them?

I was thinking of cutting them up and using in a stew, would this work?

I love mutton.. its best cooked slow, maybe braised in water with a few sprigs of mint as they are steaks.

My mum use to make lamb and leak suet pud with home made suet pastry when I was a kid. She always used mutton...she wouldn't use lamb she said there wasn't enough taste to it. Round here muttons hard to come by...so I'm jealous you have some. Hope you enjoy it...what ever you decide to make .

Many Asian butchers sell mutton, Ginger. A shoulder of mutton slow steamed in the oven is a wonderful dinner. I can remember my old gran using a hay box to slow cook it in the summer when the range was not lit.
When i was working in the food game in the 70s i would go to the abattoir mid friday mornings and buy up unsold fronts of mutton. I would then hang them for a week to mature before selling them.
Mutton is far tastier than lamb.

Lamb and Leeks is a great combination, Ginge. You just need to get friendly with your local Butcher, and he'll sort you some. By that, I don't mean your nearest Supermarket meat counter.
