Best squash or pumpkins for roasting.

My OH is always raving about the roast pumpkin he had in Australia when he was visiting family.

I have tried butternut and Jack O Lantern pumpkin (not the best for cooking I know) but while he likes them it's not the same or as good as the stuff he had down under. I explained to him that they probably grow different varieties so my question is;

Can anyone recommend a variety for roasting so that I can grow some this year.

I like my red kuri roasted - how are you planning to serve them as that may make a difference to the recommendations?

Mostly with a roast dinner for Sundays or if suitable with other roasted veg to mix with cous cous or pasta, tomatoes, onions, peppers and so on.

Uchiki Kuri is a good'un for roasting, and not too huge.

Turks Turban roast beautifully. Very floury, potato-y texture. Makes fab soup too!

If you like a sweetish flavour, my nicest one this year has been an acorn type (swapped seeds and not sure of a name), it was quite floury, and lovely sprinkled with a little chilli powder before roasting. It gave an added dimension to a roast dinner.

Crown Prince for me, hands down.

I believe they were some seeds in the virtual seed parcel.

I believe that Crown Prince originates from Australia. If I remember correctly, there are a few Australian Blue pumpkins, Jarrahdale and Queensland Blue are another two.

There is one that we get delivered on our organic veg box which is very delicious, I am fairly sure it is the Marina di Chioggia variety. It is in the Organic Gardening Catalogue, but I've not grown it myself so couldnt tell you how easy it is to grow. We also occasionally get the Kuri type and these are yummy too.

do not like pumpkin myself,as is to stringy,and not much taste at all,but squash,butternut,piquato[seeds from shop purchase]delicata and sweet dumpling,are all a firmer flesh with a sweeter,nuttier taste,the first 2 roast beautiful along side your spudz and other veg,although they do cook much quicker,the 2nd 2 are great stuffing with anything but a paxo type,euky
