  • Suggestions needed - small cake selection.

OK, Spring show coming up at end of month. One of the classes is 'Teatime Collection', homemade jam, 2 plain scones and 3 small cakes, tastefully arranged, accessories allowed.
Jam, raspberry- Tick! (can't find an actual 'tick' key)
    Scones, plain- Tick!
Accessories, tray, plates, small teacup/saucer- Tick!
Small cakes, one brownie (from another class) and .............what?
Any suggestions gratefully received, my mind has gone even more blank than usual.

Can be anything, probably need a variety of textures, shapes etc. Thinking of a macaroon, maybe. Just watched Hairy Bikers Bakeation!

You can't beat a good bakewell. But it's a tart so it may not count.

I thought of cupcakes but feel they are little bit overdone now. I am trying to think what you might get in a posh teashop on a fancy cake stand, kind of 'Ritz' tea rooms IYKWIM.
An eclair or choux might do as you can make those ahead and fill on the day but battenburg slice is out as the specify 'small cake'. Please get carried away with ideas I need more suggestions but not pastries, need to stick to the schedule wording

Brownies are baked in a slab and cut up so not cakes as such. The shop where I work sells 'brownies' wrapped in cellophane for the lunch time market. Hardly 'Ritz' tea rooms.

Do small versions of classic cakes. Think ''High Tea.'

It was one of the challenges of the recent series of Master Chef.

Carrot cake is universally loved, I think, and you can decorate with a dinky little fondant carrot!

Lemon polenta cake (Nigella's recipe), victoria sponge, and pumpkin cake would be my favourites - all done in mini format.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Thanks for all your suggestions, time to go away and google a few recipes and take into account the fact that I will be working on Thursday and Friday beforehand!

Something chocolatey would be my first choice on any cake stand, closely followed by a lemon & poppy seed muffin. Carrot cake, coffee and walnut cake, parsnip cake, banana loaf. All supernommy. If they wanted something unusual could you do something like a lavender cake, or I saw a green tea and pistachio cupcake recipe in one of my books, which would be something different? (I will happily send you the recipe but its a vegan one so I dont know how well it would turn out compared to cakes made with egg - vegan cakes tend to be on the dense side....mind you the photo looks good).

Just had a quick look through Afternoon Tea at the Ritz and they used blue and white china so are you going up market. They also did strawberry tarts and mille feuille. There is a lovely section on sandwiches and how they prepared them. Which show is it. my son lives in Headley down and i hoped to get down for the show in Guildford.

chocolate cake is my favourite. but if you want small cake so stand Lemon pole-axed cake is the best option for you and another option is cupcake.

A nice big squidgy rum truffle would be my choice, I could eat them all day long. They're not very posh, I know, but I don't do little tea cups and doilies - gimme a rum truffle and a mug of tea and I'm a happy chappy.
Tried and Tested...but the results are inconclusive
