Tradition of selling jam in re-used jars breaches EU health and safety rules | Mail Online

Don't sell jam in re-used jars... by order of Europe: Tradition of selling home-made preserves 'breaches health and safety rules'
Churches warn parishioners to stop selling preserves in re-used jars
The tradition, enjoyed by the WI, breaches EU health and safety laws

Apologies for the daily wail link.

Bloody ridiculous! Even new jars cannot be guaranteed to be sterile.

exactly, unless they;re going to come individual vacuum packed, and sterilised ala hospital kit style.

Well just how stupid is that?

Best tell the French then- the markets are full ( well not quite 'full' ) of little ol' French ladies sitting next to pots of home made confiture which they sell for about €2.50 a pot.
              "Donated jars always welcome"

Maybe 'cos it's called 'confiture' over here that they can get away with it????- tis not the same as jam!

From the Daily Wail article itself... (emphasis mine)

"The Food Standards Agency said the rules had been introduced because there was a risk of chemicals leaching out of old containers and contaminating food, though it added that it was not aware that re-used jam jars were a safety hazard."

Sounds like another over hyped load of nonsense from the Wail...

Now does it refer to the reuse of the lid?, I can't see a problem per se with using the glass jar and a cellophane lid. Every bottle I've ever bought for home brew has required sterilising, so how is that different?

Since its raining I decided to waste some time looking at the EC Regulations cited by the Daily Wail - EC Regulations 1935/2004 and 2023/2006,
EC Regulations 1935/2004 appears to relate primarily to plastics used in Food packaging and says that "glass" has not been covered by specific legislation (2009)
Regulation 2023/2006 seems to relate to printing ink on recycled containers and says that they should not come into contact with food stuff.
                    So no problem there
Caveat, I'm not a lawyer so who am I to say that the DailyWail are scaremongering?

I'd like to know the difference in sterilising Kilner jars and normal jars. How can a Kilner jar be acceptable but not another glass jar

Kilner jars are the result of over engineering a cellophane wrapper, and a elastic band.

It should be interesting to find out how they will prove it's a used jar. I think most magistrates would toss this one out.

The issue was discussed on R4 today: there have been NO prosecutions for using old jars
