  • Custard powder?

Mr Z loves custard; however as we aren't eating much carbs we have ended up with 2 large tins of custard powder in the cupboard. He doesn't even have it very often but I suppose we couldn't find a tin once and he went and bought another without realising we already had one.

Anyway - I want to run down the cupboards and have done a fine job so far! But I'm loathe to chuck one out so does anyone have any suggestions as to what to use it for.

    Not custard!

Add it to biscuits in place of some flour? It's based on cornflour so gives a nice melt in the mouth texture.

Oh, and I guess you could do the custard thing and then leave it to cool and make ice-cream with the custard?

Using it in pancakes sounds good.

Only thing with pancakes is we are - no flour no rice no bread.

I suppose I could use it in a oat flap jack type thingy instead of flour - thanks guys! I'll try that this week.

Do you feel any better for it?

I've reduced my dairy intake a lot & with exercise I feel much, much better. I still have a dash of milk in tea, but we have oat milk which we use a lot of now (have to give it one of the kids anyway).

Is there really enough carb in a tablespoon of custard powder to make much difference in the scheme of things?
If you are thinking of adding it to things like oat flapjacks anyway - might you just as well have custard?
or is it the milk that's a problem, rather than the custard powder?

I did once use it in Piccalilli because I was out of cornflour - just adjusted the sugar and turmeric in the recipe. Nobody has complained and as I'm in France its labelled Piccalilli Anglaise.

That's probably no help at all.

I do a thing with apples where you top an apple puree with a custard or vanilla sauce and then top that with brown sugar and stick it under the grill. It can be a bit sweet so don't over sweeten the puree.

Take the tin back that was bought most recently (If it's not been opened)?

No - its the fact that we aren't eating any puddings that go with it! Like sponge puddings...

It has been opened. It's only a split second after opening I saw there was already a tin in there. And this was about 2 years ago!

Much better without carbs; if I do have them I feel tired and snoozy esp between 2 and 4pm.

Invent low carb puddings to have with it.

I'd put cocoa powder in and make chocolate pudding.

We tried that but I want to use it in something rather than cook something else to go with it...I like adding cocoa though so thanks!
