I gave our polenta to the chooks as a hot mash the other day. They had basmati rice, spatzl noodles, potato flakes - all those carby things that lingered there for many months. We can't eat them.

Yeah it's been sat in my cupboard for ages, but if I can make little things like biscuits we can have the odd one or two...and I'm experimenting with gluten free for my chum.

Pinched from a BBC meal recipe......

        Salsify Chips

400g/14oz salsify, peeled, cut into thick chips

        2 tsp cornflour

        1 tsp custard powder

        oil, for frying

        salt, to taste

Salsify chips, cook the salsify in a pan of boiling salted water until tender. Drain and refresh in cold water. Dry off and dust the salsify in the cornflour and custard powder.

Heat the oil in a deep-fat fryer until 180C/355F and fry the salsify chips for 3-4 minutes, or until cooked through and golden-brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Season with salt while warm.

12.5g carbs in 100g boiled salsify - not bad at all. At a rough guesstimate one serving of salsify chips would be about 20g carbs.

BTW If you have a lot of caster sugar you could make vanilla or lavender sugar as edible gifts.

OOOH! how can you live without carbs? Is it a health thing or a diet thing? Are they really that bad for you or are you cutting them out for a short while? I'd keel over if I couldn't eat bread or rice - staples in our house. Pasta pah!
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

              Really easy!

Gives you tons of energy...Mr Z suggested it last year and I've hardly had rice, bread or pasta since.

I think that some people have found that their bodies don't cope well with carbs - personally if I don't ensure I have plenty of complex carbs in my diet I have no energy although too much of the sugary ones don't do me much good.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

We cut carbs drastically last February when the Bh was diagnosed as T2 diabetic. It's the best route to keep Type 2's in control of their diabetes. Carbohydrates are sugars.

Not realising what would happen as a consequence we cut the carbs. We've both lost about 2.5 stones in weight, we feel fit, we feel younger, we have higher energy levels and we haven't been ill with stinking colds etc all Winter as we usually are. Worse we've had was a tummy bug caught off #1 Son. It floored him, but hardly touched us. We do eat carbs, but no more than about 60g a day. I can still indulge in carby treats but the BH can't.

I think, as Alison says, it's an individual thing. There is always a period of withdrawal symptoms when you carb count, like a detox, but it does pass. I had headaches, chronic fatigue and stomach discomfort for about 10 days. But the pros are brilliant - I have clear skin, I'm a good healthy weight, I have energy. In addition, my depression isn't as horrendous as it used to and neither is my hypothyroidism.

                  I'd recommend it to anyone.

Baked apples and custard is nice. With some raisins in the middle. Yum.

Jules - did you mention a pancake made with custard powder? Any chance of a recipe?

Zaz...I was going to try them out Sunday, but I was full after dinner.

Recipe here just sub custard powder for the soy flour. I'm 100% certain it will work.

As custard powder is mostly cornflour, it should give the pancakes a bit of flexibility, the soy flour ones are quite hard to flip because they tend to split. I'll try and make a batch this afternoon, because I too have a lurking tub of custard powder.

You have to be careful with soy and thyroid.

I would use custard powder in place of cornflour when making Chinese Dishes, ie velveting meat before stirfrying or steaming......., or just throw it away and live your life.

I eat very little of any flour. It does nasty things to me. Anything with 'soy' or 'soya' always makes me suspicious. All this GM.
