  • Green tomato uses

    Hi Everyone,

Here in the GYO office, we were just discussing the best uses for unripe tomatoes. What are your favourite recipes? Do you make anything unusual with them?

Answers may be edited and published in the October issue of Grow Your Own.

My wife makes a wonderful green tomato chutney. It's a family recipe passed to her from her grandma who has refused to tell anyone else in the family the recipe! Even her own daughters!

It's lovely with a nice cheddar and dry toast in the winter!

I keep them somewhere dark - like inside a cardboard box - until they ripen - that way I'm eating red tomatoes in the New Year

Fried green tomatoes. Slice, dip in beaten egg, then dip in polenta and stick in the frying pan until they've gone golden. Add salt and pepper and eat whilst scaldingly hot.

My grandad used to keep his green tomatoes in a suitcase, lined with an old blanket, under the bed!! If I was good, I was allowed to look inside the suitcase and eat a ripe tomato (if there was one)

Didn't know they stayed green. Can't you ripen them with ethylene from a bad apple /striking a match/ lighting a lighter, or ripen them in a paper bag with red (ethylene emitting) tomatoes?

I was thinking about just this earlier as I surveyed quite a lot of green toms in the veg patch. Some are in a bowl on the tumble dryer as warmth makes them ripen, apparently. It seems to be working. I'll make chutney with the rest but I do like the sound of marmalade, will have to investigate that.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?
