Cold pickled cucumbers

After tasting these last year when I was in the US I fancy making my own from the current glut of cucumbers. I did have a recipe in a book somewhere but I'll be blown if I can find it.

Anyone got a good, preferably UK not US, recipe for cold/fridge picked cucumbers?

Last year I added a few slices of cucumber to my pickled onions, but it went mushy despite me leaving it in salt overnight before pickling. How can i pickle cucumber to retain its crispness and to store for 3 months or more.
