  • Crumble mix

Forgive me if this has already been posted, or if people already do this, but...
for the last few months I've been making up a large batch of crumble mix in one go, then bunging it in a tupper to store in the freezer. It really comes in to its own at this time of year with the fruit season beginning - you just bung your chosen fruit and sugar in a suitable dish then spoon on the mix from the freezer. Hey presto! a crumble with minimal washing up.
Ok, so I know it's not exactly difficult or time consuming to make up crumble mix, but in these days of 'fast living', it makes fixing quick home-made puds a doddle.
Just made another big batch today!

I know what you mean Waffler. I always keep a box of bread crumbs in the freezer then when I want them for a topping, just spoon some out. And a box of grated cheese in the fridge for the same reason.
It's not rocket science but some people don't seem to think of it.

Sorry DDL - only just caught up with your Q.
It's just a straight forward crumble mix, nothing special; the measurements are all 'ish' cos if it don't look right I just add a bit more of whatever! (usually butter)

          32oz plain flour
          300g cubed butter
          16oz brown sugar
          'some' porridge oats

Rub the butter in to the flour until breadcrumb-like. Stir in the sugar and some oats (4 TBSP??). Bung in an air-tight container and throw in the freezer.
You could also add chopped nuts to the mix, or even some spices, but I find that basic mix is a good basis and works with any fruit-based crumbles.

I must just add......the lobster has been in the freezer since christmas and needs eating - we are having a "special" meal because our male parts of the family are all in the Isle of Man watching the racing! Crumble ready for cooking - lobster defrosted in fridge - and a first! home made mayonnaise! Yipee! Bernie PS forgot to add, home grown onions!

To be honest I've never given crumble in the freezer a thought. Dont know where in the freezer I could put it, have 3 freezers which are full of veg etc & not alot of space. I do blanch and freeze veg even when in season for the same reason. I dont always have prep time and stuff out of the freezer cooks in half the time. Sausages under the grill & presto. instant food (almost). Oh well, guess what I'm making tomorrow.
