  • Our Jacks Guide to Broad Beans

Our Grandson Jack is just 5 and autistic. He comes every weekend and loves helping me in the garden.
He helped sowing and planting out and watering and yesterday he picked the broad beans that were ready... But then he took over from me podding them.
After a few mins I got my camcorder out and shot this video of him working hard.

Jack has just read your comments and said thank you.
Not only did he shell them he picked em all too. You want to see him tickling the tomato flowers, and furtling for tatties, and riddling soil and compost. in fact, anything I can do he wants to do.

Its been a good year for broadies and I have about the same again to pick next week.
I freeze them for use is stews and pasta dishes in the winter.

Tell Jack that I'm looking forward to seeing him on Gardener's World when he's a bit older. He's going to be a brilliant gardener.

Lovely, what a good worker he is I think I shall be calling them crash beans from now on.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
