Slow Cooker

Hi all

I got a slow cooker towards the end of last winter and we enjoyed lots of casseroles stews and roasted meats from it. I would like to try more things in it however and have just made a lasagne in it to try tonight.

Was wondering what other people cook in theirs. I've just read you can cook bread in it. I am amazed by the fact my oven may become almost obsolete!

Can't imagine making bread in it although might work for the crustless soft rolls you get in Asia. To be honest I'm struggling with the lasagne too but can see that better than the bread. I use mine mainly for casseroles or braised foods, works well for me but you'll not manage anything that has a crunchy texture etc. Did a nice piece of brisket in there last Sunday which was falling apart tender when I took it out about 10 or 11 hours later.

just made bread in mine nice crust , put tea towel over top of crockpot then put glass lid on this soaks up excess moisture, two pound loaf three hours on low , asked somebody else who said they did it for two hours a case of suck and see

South African Oxtail stew ....

but you need to place the oxtail on a rack in the oven to brown and melt off excess fat before placing in the slowcooker with wine, onions, carrots, spices etc.... then cooked for 8-9 hours and served with mash

the trick is also that you should not add too much liquid .... My slow cooker has an auto function and one cannot burn food using this setting

Must be being thick as am struggling to see how this works. The atmosphere in my slow cooker is wet (see how a tea towel would help but then that would be soggy. Do you replace it a few times to keep absorption up? Maybe my slow cooker just doesn't go high enough as I need a pretty hot temperature to get that nice crunchy crust you want on bread. 🍞

Lasagne was lovely and given that it took 5 minutes of effort from me this morning rather than the few hours I usually spend doing the bolognese - it tasted even better

the pot gives a crust the top is a bit softer than oven baked but definitely not soft roll type crust still take good knife to slice, the tea towel stops the water dripping onto loaf

Use mine for tagine , soups and slow cooked pulled pork in a homemade tomatoey barbecue sauce, or pork belly in cider and orange juice. I have used the lift out pot to bake sourdough in the oven but haven't tried it in the slow cooker itself,can't see the temperature getting high enough to get a good "spring"

I love my slower cooker, I make chilli, soups, curry and tomato pasta sauce. So handy during week throw everything in it whilst making bfast and come home to house smelling amazing.

I gave mine away. Made stew a few times but it was never as good as one that had been stirred on the stove. And as for cakes... why would I want to wait hours to make a cake when it's a quick blast in an oven and they're done!

I've just cooked a chicken in mine. Was going to do a Sunday dinner but both the kids have gone out. I'm not slaving over a hot stove for the dinner to be warmed up in the microwave later lol

when I was younger and me and my wife used to work long hours,we used to pack a slow cooker with meat and veg and a sauce or decent soup for gravy, switch it on in the morning and come home to a great hot meal

used to cook on the slow cooker 2-3 times a week .... plus used to have cheap take aways (such as kentucky or pizzas) twice a week

it's got worse of late ...now we eat beans on toast or toastiesor scrambled eggs on toast twice a week now as we are skint
