Chinese veg help please

Ok, im trying to find out the name of a veg that our local chinease take aways put in their chow mein.

It appears to be white , roundish ( at least in the meal ) and crunchy.
Ive searched several recipes online but cant find the answer, anyone have an idea ?, im gonna have to ask them to share their secrets otherwise

Water chestnuts? Buy them in tins i think.

I agree with VC - the other thing you sometimes get is bamboo shoot but they tend to be oblong cut. Again you can buy them in tins/jars.
