  • Sorry but......festive bake ideas please?

As hubbys Macmillan morning went well I have been volunteered to make cakes for a christmad charity morning

    For the Macmillan I done

    Saus. rolls
    Lemon and Lime drizzle
    Coffee marble cake
Spiced courgette cake with citrus buttercream
    Low sugar blueberry crunch
Tea cake (which came home )
    Chilli choc 'man' cake

Just after ideas for festive cakes and savouries. I would like to get away from fruitcake, choc. log and mince pies or at least give them a twist.

All ideas greatly appreciated . Oh and I have already tried telling Hubby its his turn

Kransekake. It is v easy, you make it in advance and freeze so you get chewy marzipany gorgeousness and most people will never have seen it before. You can either do the tower of rings, which is harder to price to sell, or small rings or sticks. Also nice with the ends dipped in chocolate.

i use a 50/50 mix of ground almonds and blitzed (unpeeled) almonds. And a drop of almond essence.

My mom is doing a gingerbread house for the country market she bakes for. She is raffling off a gingerbread sledge with sweets like Heroes or Celebrations as the presents.
I always my mince pies with icing on the top instead of a pastry top.
I love carrot cake. You could still make it festive with Christmas icing on top.

Nice idea to do some different stuff but I'd still do some standard stuff too as lots of people are quite traditional, especially round specific festivals - wouldn't be Christmas without rich fruit cake and mince pies

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

You could swap your lemon drizzle cake for a cinnamon version. Add cinnamon to your recipe omit the lemon and lime and use a cinnamon icing to drizxle over.
I often cook a flourless clementine cake (Nigella recipe) which is quite Festive. Pretty good for a GF option if you need one. Can be served as it is or with cream.
Though I'm with Alison, I rarely eat cake but I love a proper homemade mince pie. You can't miss those out

                    How about a stollen wreath?

I'm going to try one this year as christmas cake never gets eaten up. No-one is that keen on it.

Or on the same site a stollen cake wreath

I have an issue with mince pies I am not allowed to use homemade mince meat (apparently it is all hubbys) and it feels wrong making mincepies with shop bought mincemeat. Then there is the mincepies can be bought in bulk from the shop a lot cheaper than I can make them argument as well

So I know there will be comments at their absence, but am quite sure all the trades men will quickly over come the issue with other cakes

Edit: Spiced apple pies are also nice

Side-tracking a bit here - sorry NG - but isn't this a neat idea? Trees made from paper doilies with an LED tealight inside.

Perhaps you could decorate your stall table with them, NG

NG rushes off to 'you know when you are old thread'..............LED + tealight

They are simple and pretty. They have just reminded me of marshmallow snowmen. I hope I can find this thread in Dec.

a real tealight would set fire to the doilies....

                            battery operated LEDs are safer
