  • why are people so darn rude these days?

    GGrrrr!

I have spent the afternoon trying to GIVE AWAY FOR FREE a brand new unused breadmaker on freecycle. I had several replies, but none of them thought to include their phone number (doh!)

I then had to draft emails to all of them with my number, and still nobody calls. I re-check my email, and have a snotty one from somebody berating me for wasting her time ....!!!!!!

... because SHE has misdialled MY number! Unbelievable. I am sitting here, 4 hours on, still waiting for someone to come and take away this darn breadmaker.

Anyone else getting really rubbed up about how rude people are these days? What is it? Bad diet, stress, too much bad TV? I am sick of giving way to people, opening doors, letting cars pull out in front, only for them to totally fail to acknowledge or thank me. It is turning me into a grumpy old woman, and I don't like it.

ok, rant over. Anyone want a breadmaker?

Rudeness is no more or less than a by-product of selfishness and for that we need to thank the blessed Margaret and her chief disciple, Bliar. How things will work out in wee Gordie's one-party state remains to be seen.

By the way, country folk here in central France are still polite, but don't ask me (or my daughter) about Parisians!

By the way 2 - thanks, but we already have one (in fact scarey55 is driving it now!)

Deep breaths, dear, calm down.Think only happy thoughts!! People are as they always were. Some good, some bad. Some rude, some polite and thoughtful. Some sweet and nice ,some b*******s.
And no,I don't want a breadmaker. If you look in your local paper at the for sale ads.I will bet you will find at least one ad. per night selling a breadmaker!!
My daughter bought one and for about three weeks it was the best thing since-what??-sliced bread?-now it is consigned to the cupboard where it might one day come in useful.Along with her coffee bean grinder et.al.
Put it in your cupboard and one day--who knows!!!

I have found that some people on Freecycle seem to think that as they're not paying anything for the stuff it doesn't matter if they don't turn up when expected or at all. Additionally, I have had people who seem to think that just because they said they're interested, the item is theirs - not seeming to realise that 43 other people had responded before them.

And whilst I'm moaning, I HATE seeing on freecycle ads like 'Wanted laptop computer as mine seems to have packed up', or 'car, mine has just broken down'. As though it justifies begging for expensive luxury items just because yours doesn't work any more! Grrrrr

I was delighted when I first heard about Freecycle - what a great idea! - but have to concur that it's marred by greedy and rude people

I'm a member of another similar site that started locally (but is now becoming nationwide) partly because of these issues and although not perfect, it's better. The main difference is the format, it's a message board like this one and there's much more sense of community. It's also a lot more obvious when there's someone just trying to nab every decent item posted.

          It's called Don't Dump That:

          http://www.dontdumpthat.com/

I think a lot of sites are still very small but it's worth a look, if it's your sort of thing. I only ever use ours now, never Freecycle and I've only ever had one 'iffy' experience.

I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Best thing I've seen on freecycle is a wanted add for wedding witnesses.

I'm waiting for a woman to pick up a weight bench that i had freecycled. she was due yesterday, now tonight which looks doubtful. but I did get a rotary compost bin yesterday on freecycle so I am very happy. What breadmaker is it? is it better tahn my one? I use the machine every day nearly. I must be their only fan.:-)

You're not the only fan, love mine but had to pay for it!!! Freecycle is generally good but you do get some people taking advantage. It's worth remembering though that some people aren't too keen giving out phone numbers to strangers to start with and I can understand their caution, they don't know you're OK. I've signed up for the Don't dump that site, it's very much in it's infancy around here with very few members and not much stuff so not really an alternative yet. I've got rid of loads of stuff on freecycle and 80% of the time it's been fine, try to concentrate on the good stuff and give people the benefit of the doubt when it doesn't. Perhaps they haven't had time to check their mails or they have a problem with their PC.

Do agree with the post above though about some people being greedy. Have only once posted a wanted, prefer to wait and see what comes about and anyway, we're trying to declutter, not get more stuff. Anybody want an old paper shredder, we've got two.............

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

So easy to make without a breadmaker.Just follow any recipe for bread and at the kneading stage add and knead in your chosen flavourings.

Re Freecycle, I've offered a few things and have so far had good experiences with people picking them up, but I've not yet taken and felt quite 'affronted' when there was an debate going on as to if they should let people outside the area use it. The thing is that my area doesn't have it's own Freecycle and this one was the nearest to me.. hey ho, I now don't go on there as it got quite insulting etc..

About rudeness, I live in an area where rudeness is unfortunately quite the norm. It's made me seriously think about moving before now but I'm not being put off etc. There's a distinct lack of respect for authority (I don't think Scared55 is a million miles off with their comments). Thing is, it makes me even more aware of how I'm seen by others and makes me work harder to be polite when I'm out. Wish more people could be like that...

                          Manners, rudeness and society

We are bearing the fruits of the society we have nurtured - rudeness, intolerance, selfishness et al...

Having recently lived in the US, Germany and the Netherlands I can safely say that whilst these countires have their problems the social attitudes are far more acceptable, parents hold the resposibility for teaching their kids manners and decency.

We have ourselves to blame for letting this shower of a government in. Some of us by our vote, and others by political lethargy (I will not vote mob). Scared55 is bang on! Time to leave the UK along with 650,000 others methinx!
                          Let's go diggin' dirt....

Cut your engines, cool your wings,
                          You've taken me home...

Yep I am a great fan of freecycle BUT I have found some people who have been interested in an item and never reply to any of my emails. I am also trying to get rid of a sofa bed and people are so fussy. I have had several people coming but then they email to tell me they can't come due to some reason or another. Have now contacted a charity to come and collect as I can't give it away on freecycle.
