I don't know either, though I know in Windows Word there is an advanced character set you can get to (though I can't remember how and don't yet have in on the laptop to check, sorry) but otherwise I usually write them as 1/2 or 1/4.
Not sure if that helps?

these may be titled slightly differently because all my options are in French but you'll get the idea.
There, you should find a list of unusual characters (as well as the usual ones)
Once you have the character you need, click on it and look on the bottom right for alt+ make a note of the number then go back to your application and hold the Alt key down and (keeping it down) press the numbers on your numeric keypad and let go.
½ is Alt and 0189
¼ is Alt and 0188
Hope this helps.

When you are in Word you can customise the insertion of symbols, like half, quarter and three quarters.
Open a new Word document, go to insert symbol, highlight the quarter, click on the shortcut key, and put in the keys you want to use for the shortcut. For a quarter I use ctrl+14, for a half ctrl+12 and for three quarters, ctrl+34. It only works in a Word document, not when you are on-line. If you want to post a recipe using fractions, you need to type it in Word, cut and paste into your email.

Reason: repeated typing
If you want to type a recipe using fractions, it is better to type it up in word, and then copy and paste on to the website.

Or do what scarey55 set out earlier - you will notice her advice contained fractions. It will also allow you to use things like °C (or °F) for recipes, and accented and foreign characters.

Yes but its very long winded. Having customised the fractions, if I am in a word document and want to type half, all I do is ctrl12 and the fraction appears, similarly for a quarter, ctrl14 and for three quarters ctrl34, without the need to go through the five stages listed.
