  • How much would you pay for a gardening day school/course?

Just had a mail shot for a day course at Sarah R@ven, taught by Mark D1acono of Otter Farm about growing "The Ultimate Orchard". How to choose, plant, maintain and enjoy your orchard.
Without goggling, what would you pay for the day, including refreshments and a 2 course lunch? Perhaps I should say - what is the cost of the day?

    Just curious

I'm going to guess at it having a comparable cost to some of the professional courses I attend. Some are fairly cheap - maybe £80/day - but I've paid more than £300/day for some as well. Those expensive days tend to require more experts to be on hand though and expenses for lots of other people too. So I'm going to guess at a bit less... £250?

Not an amount I would pay, I hasten to add!!!

Hmm, I would say the same as SC ( I wonder if the lunch is good?)
But to be different i’ll go with £245 -
They are a complete rip off!

        ...I don’t know why but I thought I’d read £280!

Lunch is made with Sarah's own garden produce!! Does that help you value it?

Well, I went on a one day course at our local college a year or two back. They had quite a few different gardening days, £35 for one day course, lunch not included but £10 would get you 2courses and a hot drink in the refectory.

Add a bit for inflation, that’s about £50?

Edit. Hadn’t read bit about home grown food. Make that £60.

I do a few courses a year - not gardening! As a treat! I have them for birthday present option. But I won’t do “privately” run ones. College courses are often funded so are much cheaper.
I’ve recently done a course in a college in London and that cost £50 for the day with all supplies included.

                #Lunch was £3.80!!

You'd like a few more details, I expect?
You can arrive at 10 for tea/coffee.
                  The course starts at 10.30 - 11.30.
Then there a 20 minute break for refreshments and homemade biscuits.
Start again at 11.50 until 13.00
Then its time for lunch until 14.15.
                  Afternoon session 14-15 - 15.30
Say Bye- Bye or is it Buy-Buy as you wander around SR's garden.

I make that 3hrs 25 mins of tuition and 2 hrs 25 of "food".

                  Any more guesses?

It would need to be a short day for me to go as its 205 miles or 3 hours 30 mins away.

It would be quicker to go to Mark Diacono's Otter Farm in Devon.

Sounds like it should be in one of those 'adventure /experiences' you buy for a loved one's birthday/Xmas pressie instead of a watch/piece of jewellery.
                        My guess...£650?

I think they would charge £250. I’d probably pay £80.

Interesting how none of us would pay an inflated price for these courses. The actual cost is £185.
I'd rather spend that money on some interesting fruit trees than listen to someone talking about them for 3 hours.
