I am due to renew/change my broadband contract and looking at some of the providers available to me there is one called NOW, could anyone tell me if they are reliable or not

Been using Bt for 15 years with no problems, not tried any of the others recently, did have Tiscali, they were pretty rubbish.

Thanks burnie but possibly I should have said that NOW was showing as the cheapest provider, and as I am trying to save a bit of money ( I know you are surprised at that) I was wondering if they are reliable

Have a look at the customer revues for anything you are thinking about Rary. I use Plusnet and have never had problems. £21 gives me unlimited BB and line rental.

Do you still use your landline phone? If so check what charges there are for things like caller display and number barring.

I was going to switch to Virgin until found how much they charged for things I got free from Talktalk.

Make a list of features you need....

etc.


and what you may not need

Gaming
Video on Demand
Up/down loading files

and like DannyK says phone features.


1471,1571, Caller display / Blocking, Day calls included / Weekend and Evening etc... lots to think about

I review my contract every time it nears termination. If you keep swapping, it seems you get latest equipment and best pricing

I had a look at talktalk, it asked for my post code then my landline, which I submitted, but couldn't find any info about call anytime so went on to chat put in what I wanted got back whats your name so rather than my Christian name I put in my surname beginning with Mr. was then asked phone number and address, I informed the person I had completed the checks and everything was fine I just wanted to know the cost of a package with call anytime, but they still wanted address and phone number, so I disconnected I am now wondering if, by the time I reach the age VC is now, will I be like Victor Meldrum

Now is also owned by Sky so if you have ever had Sky I would say its the same as them. it also depends on your area etc, there's a site that checks the best one for your area

I've been with BT since I first had a phone... 25 years ago ish? We just switched to Talk Talk after BT hiked our charges twice in one contract period. I'm still angry about it!

We've only had TT a short while, but the speed is excellent and - which is more surprising - the signal strength in our house is much better than BT. We have an old, sprawling house with thick sandstone walls, but the new hub is handling it all very well.

We're saving something like £50 a month.

For many customers, they are reliant on BT to deliver the wires to the house. Think it may only be Virgin that have their own infrastructure (wires). With BT, once the decision to go fibre is made, I don't think you can go back to copper (Sure someone else will correct me if wrong) so it is important to understand if you need "superfast fibre" or if copper will deliver what you need. Remember they are getting to critical mass and I'd think they will start giving "very good deals to move over in the near future (perhaps just a wish on my part).and may be a worth waiting to next contract.

Once you are in the house, the router placement is very important. Put it somewhere where there is no water or thick walls between it and you device. Thinking of my mothers house where Router is in the hall next to water cylinder... it was move 1' and was like night and day regarding speed. A Current router will always give better speed and security. Change the password if other than BT.

I have noticed that some new routers don't have the 4 network points on the back. I need 2 - 1 for Solar Monitoring and 2nd to get good network connection to TV. (A thick wall is in the way). Another thing to consider.

Agree router should be plugged into main socket. Only saying moving it slightly (away from electrical interference thick walls and water) could make a significant difference.

The location of main socket is not always best position for broadband coverage. Things like shielded cables and network extenders help to resolve many issues.
