  • Remember, remember.........

Bonfire at allotment this morning and huge bonfire at my garden this afternoon.

Rhododendron foliage although green, burns really well as it must be full of essential oil!

I smell like a kipper now!

"Rhododendron foliage although green, burns really well ..."

Don't know, but the smoke may be poisonous too - best to go a bit steady if near the fire and not to stand down wind.

(I'm not a big supporter of the 'health & safety means we can't do anything' brigade BTW, but some things are dangerous and knowing which to be careful of is generally wise)

      All gone and still alive.:

Btw I think that laurel leaves have cyanide in them? Used to use broken up laurel leaves which smell of marzipan in a jar with butterflies and moths to kill them humanely for mounting when we were at school. Rhodies are ok though methinks.

Most of the rhododendrons up here have a disease ( can't spell it, not going to try ). The forestry commission ( or someone, I really should pay attention once in a while! ) is enforcing cutting down and burning in situ.
Smoke inhalation from them will do you no more harm than smoke inhalation from any other wood you're likely to put on your bonfire.

Rhodos also contain potential toxins but are only harmful when eaten.
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!

Didn't fancy a rhodo salad that day.
