  • Evening all, it's raining as I type but it's been another cracker of a day. First task was to order a funeral wreath for my late aunt. I wanted to do the same as I did when my uncle died 4 years ago. Shock horror though, what I paid £50 for then was quoted at £80. Have fresh flower prices gone up that much in the interim. Anyway, common sense prevailed and I settled for less although I paid the same as I did last time.

My next task was also financial and that was to go and ask a garden centre which has supported our vegetable show if they would be able to help again this year. That was difficult and I still don't know whether they are going to help. I ended up by saying if they felt they couldn't help that we wouldn't take the huff and would still continue to use them. It ended by them asking me to give them a digital copy of our logo to put on the back of the vouchers we get. Sounds more than hopeful don't it but I'm not holding my breath in case it doesn't happen.

Came home, made a cuppa and then fell asleep before I scoffed it. must have been a stressful day. Tea was left overs. Cauliflower and stilton soup.(lighter to eat than the broccoli version but just as tasty) and apple and blueberry crumble. Think I'll need to go on the same diet as Nicos

      • Morning, FF. And everyone else. Well, it might be hot and dark where you are, FF, but here it's bright and quite cool. There was a light mist in the valley early on and a dew everywhere. Autumn is coming, for sure.

Cleared some dead squash vines yesterday. They really are prickly things to handle. And the climbing beans have suddenly started to look poorly. I'm guessing the rain did that. There are loads of beans about 6 to 8 cm long on the plants, but they've been like that for days, so maybe they won't develop any further. Beetroot are looking good. So good, in fact, with new leaves popping up, that I fear they might be thinking of bolting.

Not much else gardening-wise to report. Oh yes, the snails have discovered my newly planted brassicas... So I'll be out late with a torch tonight.

Meanwhile, have a good day everyone.

        • Mornings!
It feels much cooler this morning, compared to the last few, grey skies and a light drizzle now and again. This certainly wasn't in the forecast when I checked last night, and put some washing in the m/c - oh well "The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men…."
          So it looks like I'll be painting haha! A few more cups of tea before that happens though ;

          Have a good'un

          • Good morning all.
            Still sunny here.
Nothing on the agenda today, just bits and bobs.
            Have a good day all..

Nicos, no tasting of the tomatoes unfortunately, just viewing.
Squashing and saving the seeds at the weekend if you bring a child along to do the squashing.
Its supposed to be a fun thing to get children involved.
I wont be going as I know it will be chaos.
Also car parking is a major problem.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

                • Afternoon n'all
Early start...still loads to do and I really just couldn't be bothered
Do you think if I just went back to bed no-one would notice?

I've just thrown a bread and butter pudding in the oven, using up old bread and bits of jam left at the bottom of pots....plus a nice apple.

I did take off some of the tomato leaves earlier but noticed most of the green tomatoes have blossom end rot not a good year for them clearly!

                  Ok...so more stuff to do...
Cold juice was much appreciated , thanks LD...I wonder if your fairy will call over here later?...I have at least 8 hrs worth of ironing * falls over backwards at the very thought.

                  See ya later peeps...

AP you are getting me worried as I can't be many years younger than you and I hope I don't finishing up like that, falling asleep before I enjoy my cuppa
And rather than trying the same diet as Nicos, try mine, a sea food diet, see food and eat it

                    • Good afternoon, a lot cooler today and rain though at the moment sunny with a strong wind, haven't done much walking today to try and rest my knee, OH wanted to go to a factory shop which suited fine though I was a bit worried about letting her go round by herself as when she is walking by herself she gets a bit too free with the money though today she was fine she even bought me a waistcoat, which I was told was not for the garden so not too bad a day the knee feels fine and the wallet is still ok

                        • Evening all, my morning was spent cutting grass for my last remaining customer with her sit and ride mower, an 18 year old John Deere. The cutting deck really needs replacing but the mower has been declared obsolete by JD and so a replacement just isn't available. Some welding was done but the deck has twisted/buckled and cuts lower at one side than the other. The obvious remedy would be a replacement mower but my customer who btw is 87 will be selling up and moving to live with her daughter in the new year so in reality only a few more cuts to do before the end of the season. What I've done to achieve a decent finish is to cut one way without the grass box on and then to turn around and go back over the same strip of grass in the opposite direction thereby ensuring both sides of the cut are equal. Finally, after cutting the whole lawn in that fashion, I attached the grass box, Lifted the deck a notch and then hoovered up the cuttings. Laborious and tedious but a decent finish .

Came home via M&S and bought some nice nosh for our tea and once home, used my table saw to cut some strips of timber to use as measuring sticks amd also fashioned some handles for them. Rain then stopped play so the kettle went on
