  • Morning all. Drab coldish day here today. I'm currently debating whether to put pots of stuff in the front garden but I'm fighting with the old 'back greens are for growing and front gardens are for showing' school of thought. I.e. flowery nice stuff in the front and practical veggy type stuff in the back.

They are my gardens so I should be able to put whatever I want wherever I want but I'm secretly a wimpy conformist.

I need to go food shopping in a minute so maybe I'll buy myself a set of balls!

    Have a good one!

    • You have cicadas Snoop?...we have crickets which are just as noisy
We actually have a 'pet' one we give morsals of food to occasionally when we eat outdoors.
He lives under our back lawn.
      Charlie cricket.
Very partial to a morsel of meat from time to time which he promptly pulls into his burrow

      • ^One of the locals told me they were cicadas. But you could be right, as we definitely have black crickets and great green bush crickets. Between them, they kick up a right racket.

In fact, we have lots of varieties of similar insects. My least favourite is this armour-plated affair: https://www.flickr.com/photos/123547990@N06/14324528033

Edited to add: mods, this isn't my photo. Am I allowed to post a link like this?

        • A few years ago we had one locust
Blown over on the Saharan sand.
In one day it ate most of the foliage on a few of our climbing French beans
Yes...one! (Well, that's all we could find)
The following year the same thing happened, but never since...

They can't half nip your fingers either!

          • You probably have a mixture of them Snoop. Ours always remind me of a holiday zillions of years ago in Greece!

            • Good afternoon, its been a wet miserable day today, some exceptionally heave downpours and now though it looks a bit brighter there is a strong wind blowing, when out at the greenhouse I checked my plants in the cold frames and one try which is normally used for soaking my plants was sitting with two inches of water which I emptied out and no doubt will be sitting the same way again, will need to check it when I get home as we are watching the boy's at the moment, well enjoy your weekend whatever the weather
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

              • The grey has finally cleared here and we have brilliant sunshine
I did manage to find some 'get up and go' - and went to the plot, tied the canes on the frame and planted up with runner beans. Another job ticked off the list

Need to get those planted out today for sure!
Wish I'd known I'd've sent you some seeds from mine. I collect them every year because they are in the last photo of Brian in our garden.

                  • I definitely overdid it yesterday. I didn't go out for my usual meet my friends at the pub. And the plants are are still in the car. I have checked on them and they will be OK until tomorrow.

                    • Another post. It's my daughters birthday on Monday and I have the ongoing problem for her birthday and "ahem" C*******s what to buy her. Sooo, I asked my granddaughter and she told me of some earrings that her mother had her eyes on. So, I left it a bit late, but bought them. They have turned up and I'm not happy. They were described as silver, and were definitely silver priced. The tag describes them as stainless steel. I don't have time to buy something else and I've cut the bit of the tag that says stainless steel off. How long before she realises they're not silver? Gulp.

                      • Perhaps it's just the posts that are stainless steel? Fewer people have allergies to SS.
She should be happy anyway, whatever they are, if she has had her eye on them....

                        • I imagine, Janie, that if you can see they're not silver, she will too. If you're not happy, contact the vendor. Otherwise, just give them to her. Like TS says, if they're what she wants and seeing as they're a gift, I'm sure she'll be pleased.

In other news, going to finish off the fence today, so planting out will begin. And Mr Snoop has bought me some more compost for seeds. It's going to be hot today. Up into the 30s. Need to find my shorts.

                          Have a great day, everyone.

I have a request (seeing as we don't have the rant thread at the moment)....
Next time I have the bright idea of following on after the spud crop, I decide to sow radish, carrots, beetroot and spring onions you send me to have my head examined....I gave so many voluntary spud plants coming through that it's an absolute mess
